Questions to ask us

Sometimes, interviewees struggle to think of things to ask us. We like it when you ask questions, becasue it helps us learn about eachother… and we especially like the hard questions. Here are some ideas for questions you might want to ask (maybe just choose a few, not all of them!).

  • What opportunities are there for cross-training?
  • What opportunities are there for growth / personal development?
  • How often will I receive a performance review?
  • What’s your least favourite thing about working here?
  • Do I assess my peers; will they assess me?
  • Are there formal ways for me to assess my manager?
  • Can you give me an overview of the company’s strategic plan?
  • What are the biggest threats to the company in the next 12 months? How do you plan to deal with them?
  • What effect has the global financial crises had on your company?
  • How have you made an impact at the comapny?
  • What does the day-to-day work look like, for this role? [can I speak with someoen who holds this position?]
  • How will I know I have done quality work?
  • Is there anything in regards to me that you are on the fence about, or feel is a grey area?
  • Why did the last person in this role leave?
  • What’s your vision for the future?
  • Do you think I’ll be a good fit for the job?
  • What would happen if I made a serious mistake?
  • Can I see my work area / meet some peers? (if you can, ask them what they do in a typical day)
  • What differentiated good and bad people in this role in the past?
  • How is your product any different to the competition?
  • What are some problems the company is facing currently? How do you plan to deal with them?
  • How can I effect change in the company?
  • What’s your favourite thing about working here?
  • What effect can I have on the company’s success?
  • [if a fixed term contract is on offer] How can I have the best chance of contract renewal at the end of its period?
  • What are my KPI’s?
  • Can I meet the CEO?

And if you can meet the CEO, make sure you’re ready to ask one question, cos they’ll be plenty busy. Some ideas:

  • How will the company look in five years time?
  • How do you keep employees excited?
